Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is a grappling based martial art that took the world by storm with the advent of UFC 1 (Ultimate Fighting Championship in 1993). In a single night - the unassuming and comparatively small Royce Gracie fought multiple opponents throughout the course of the night with different martial arts backgrounds and defeated them ALL.

Jiu Jitsu and Judo both originate from Japan and are two sides of the same coin. Where in Judo one learns to throw one's opponent to the ground - Jiu Jitsu uses efficient methods of controlling the opponent's body and submitting them (to yield or surrender) by using joint locks and strangulations whilst on the ground.

Here at Carlson Gracie Karachi - we learn how to take down an opponent, control them effectively on the ground, and submit them without throwing a single punch or kick. Even though we do not teach "MMA Classes" - Brazilian Jiu Jitsu's self defence aspect is inherently linked to MMA and MMA to Jiu Jitsu.

Unlike many traditional martial arts which have now been watered down with ‘black belts’, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu has still managed to keep the sanctity of its belt system. On average it takes about 10 years for someone to achieve the rank of Black Belt in Jiu Jitsu and they must be 18 or above. Unlike many striking martial arts that give teenagers black belts too soon and a false sense of security.

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu uses strict controls, such as lineage to control the authenticity of the belt rank. Any legitimate practitioner can trace back their lineage to the beginning of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu: for example: Carlson Gracie Team Karachi’s instructor's lineage is: Mitsuyo Maeda> Carlos Gracie> Carlson Gracie>Ricardo Liborio>Nelson Solari>Wilson Junior>Alisha Ahmad
